SPACE FACTS 4: The universe

Our planet is part of our solar system, orbiting around our sun.

There are millions of other solar systems, each with suns, planets and moons, that make up the Milky Way Galaxy.

There are millions of other galaxies that make up the universe. Our nearest galaxy is called Andromeda and is 2.5 million light years away.

The Hubble Space Telescope can see stars and galaxies 13.4 billion light years away and the new Webb Telescope can reach over 13.5 billion light years away. That means the light we see from these stars has taken over 13.5 billion years to reach Earth! The beginning of the universe is estimated to have occurred roughly 13.8 billion years ago so these galaxies are some of the first to have formed. This picture was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
