Part 5

So is it OK to use music written by Classical composers when writing a pop song?

The copyright law states that music enters "Public Domain" 70 years after the composer has died. This means that (in the year 2025) we can freely use any music where the composer died before 1955.

The composers that created the music we have used in this project were:

For the verses and chorus:

   Beethoven (1770 - 1827)

   Dvorak (1841 - 1904)

   Grieg (1843 - 1907)

For the dramatic openings:

   Beethoven (1770 - 1827)

   Brahms (1833 - 1897)

   Haydn (1732 - 1809)

   Grieg (1843 - 1907)

   Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1911)

   Mahler (1860 - 1911)

I did think the opening of Orff's "Carmina Burana" would make an excellent choice for a dramatic opening to our songs but as he didn't die until 1982, this music cannot be used without permission and payment until the year 2052!

Watch this video to see more examples of how Classical music has been used in pop songs.

Pop songs usually come with videos. Look at the various videos that have been made for the songs we have studied.

Now think how you would like your video to look if you were going to make one.
